Sundance Film Festival 2011 "Pandemic 41.410806, -75.654259"

Posted: 15 Jan 2011 07:44 PM PST

Bree and her little brother, Tyler, know that their parents awaken only at sundown and are capable of strange and dangerous nocturnal behavior, but Tyler is unwilling to leave them. Programmer's Note: Screening at this year's Festival in front of the feature "Sound of My Voice ," Lance Weiler's "Pandemic 41.410806, -75.654259" is part of a larger storytelling experience involving film, mobile, online, social gaming, print, and real world interactions. Concerning two children hiding out in a basement after a virus has turned their mother into something abominable, "Pandemic" marks the first in a series of shorts that will be shot around the world later this year. The short takes place in the same universe as Weiler's feature script "HiM," which recently went through the Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab. Adventurous Park City visitors can also participate in the New Frontier Installation "Pandemic 1.0," Weiler's initial public release of this immersive story-world. Sundance Film Festival Classics "Pop Foul"

Posted: 15 Jan 2011 07:43 PM PST

A boy sees his father attacked by a local thug on the way home from a Little League game and agrees to help hide the incident from his mother. Programmer's Note: An official selection of the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, "Pop Foul" depicts a simmering adolescent emotional turmoil with great strength and skillfully erupts into a devastating conclusion. Completed at Columbia University's film program, this student work earned Molson a place on Filmmaker Magazine's "25 Faces to Watch" list that year. He participated in the 2008 Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab with a feature-length work that he has since adapted into "Crazy Beats Strong Every Time," a new short holding its world premiere at this year's Festival.

Sundance Film Festival Classics "Sikumi"

Posted: 15 Jan 2011 07:12 PM PST

The story of an Inuit hunter who drives his dog team out on the frozen Arctic Ocean in search of seals, but instead, becomes a witness to murder. Programmer's Note: Armed with an MFA from NYU, Inupiaq filmmaker Andrew Okpeaha MacLean first arrived at the Sundance Film Festival in 2005 with his short film "Seal Hunting For Dad." Three years later, MacLean returned to Park City with the powerful short drama "Sikumi (On The Ice)," about an Inuit hunter who witnesses a murder on the Arctic Ocean. The film, loved by audiences and heralded by jurors, captured a Special Jury Prize at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and played at over 40 film festivals across the globe. Having just turned "Sikumi" to a feature with help from Sundance Institute's Feature Film Program, MacLean will be once again returning to the Festival in January and presenting the story in elongated form for a new audience to discover and enjoy.

Sundance Film Festival Classics "Little Farm"

Posted: 15 Jan 2011 06:51 PM PST

The wages of sin. A foul-mouthed family of brother and sister, in their late teens or early 20s, and their father run a small farm. During one argument between the siblings, ostensibly about her choice of a man to marry, she hints that she knows why he has no woman in his life. Later that night, when dad's sleeping off heavy drinking, brother and sister open Pandora's box. Programmer's Note: Had you watched Calvin Reeder's film 'Little Farm' before 'The Signal' in 2007, you would see that this guy commands a crowd. Part twisted family drama, part 70s splatterhouse throwback, the film mixes horror and humor in the most sinful way possible. One year later, Reeder returned to the Festival with 'The Rambler,' an existential journey into madness that once again was met by hooting, hollering, and rabid fandom. Reeder is back this year with his feature 'The Oregonian,' which lives up to the hype he created in short form and cements him as one of the most twisted yet unique voices out there. Enjoy the ride, don't cover your eyes, and be prepared for an experience that is literally mind-blowing.

Sundance Film Festival Classics "Countertransference"

Posted: 15 Jan 2011 07:45 PM PST

A lonely woman with assertiveness issues finds her problems multiplied in therapy. Programmer's Note: 'Countertransference,' Madeleine Olnek's ( http://www.madeleineolnek.com ) second Sundance Film Festival entry (she debuted in Park City with the short film 'Hold Up' in 2006) shows how her background as a playwright has enabled her to harness stellar performances (most notably Deb Margolin as the lead) and deliver a script textured with both hilarity and depth. Overcoming some challenges on set - like an equipment truck hitting a parked car and causing $1,400 worth of damage - the fearless director put together what was one of this year's most hysterical productions. Olnek returns to the Festival this year with her feature 'Codependent Lesbian Alien Seeks Same' which shows her universal appeal for laughs and language, and proves that you don't need a ton of dough to make a proper science-fiction fantasy. http://www.madeleineolnek.com

Sundance Film Festival Classics "By Modern Measure"

Posted: 15 Jan 2011 07:13 PM PST

As part of an ongoing, unaired TV series ('By Modern Measure'), an amateur French sociologist presents his observations on a day in the life to two young Americans who meet by chance outside a Taco Bell on October 08, 2006. Programmer's Note: A favorite of the festival circuit, Matthew Lessner's hilariously searing and endearing glimpse at the pop culture saturation of American youth played at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. Throwing more than a knowing smirk to the techniques of the French New Wave, Lessner creates a clever prism with which to examine the way we make ourselves oblivious to the world around us in these modern times. It's particularly pleasing that the core ideas first seen here have been developed into his satirical first feature 'The Woods' ( http://www.joinusinTHEWOODS.com ), which has its world premiere at this year's Festival. Composed simply but effectively, this well-paced and surprisingly dense film proves you don't need much to make a memorable short. http://www.joinusinTHEWOODS.com
